Telegraph Cove, Vancouver IslandTelegraph Cove Travel Guide

Most visitors come to Telegraph Cove to go whale watching on Johnstone Strait, but the village itself is well worth the eight kilometer detour from the highway. Built around a deep sheltered harbor, it’s one of the last existing “boardwalk” communities on Vancouver Island. Many of the buildings stand on stilts and pilings over the water, and are linked by a boardwalk.

There are less than 20 year-round residents of Telegraph Cove, but the population swells enormously during late spring and summer when whale watching, scuba diving and salt water fishing charters do a roaring trade, canoeists and kayakers arrive to paddles along Johnstone Strait and the campground opens for the season. Walk along the boardwalk passing cabins, an art gallery and a small store selling groceries, fishing tackle and licenses, bait, gas, oil and souvenirs.
